Chrysocolla, Planet Mine
Chrysocolla
Locality: Planet Mine, Planet, Buckskin Mountains, La Paz County, Arizona, USA
Planet mine, nestled in the Buckskin Mountains of Arizona has been mined for copper ore since its discovery in 1863, almost 50 years before Arizona became a state. The ore at this location is always brightly colored shades of blue and green, with a majority of the mineralization being malachite, chrysocolla, and chalcanthite.
This piece shows the textbook beautiful blue chrysocolla color typical of the species, in a range of shades. The surface is covered in a thin layer of chrysocolla, topped by tiny “rosette” crystal clusters, perhaps as a pseudomorph after azurite- a typical replacement in the region.
Dimensions:
Height: 3.53 cm
Width: 3.08 cm
Depth: 2.07 cm
